Blaine County Elections

A special meeting of the Watonga Hospital Board is today at 5:30 pm at City Hall. An executive session is scheduled to discuss attorney findings on the Quorum Contract.

The Friends of the Watonga Library Book Sale is scheduled for Friday and Saturday September 20 - 21 at City Hall. For information call 623-7748. Friday's sale will be from 10 am until 8 pm. Saturday's sale will be from 10 am until 3 pm. A special sale for members only will be Thursday September 19 from 4 pm until 7 pm. Anyone can be a member and you can join at the sale.

Sheriff's Report

Blaine County Sheriff's Officers arrested Adam Ward and William Lee Junior last Tuesday on a routine traffic stop in the city limits of Geary. Officers recognized Ward as driving under suspension. He was arrested on that charge and was found to have a large hunting knife under his t-shirt. He was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. Inside the vehicle, officers found a pipe used to smoke controlled dangerous substances. Both men were arrested for possession of paraphernalia. Lee, who was the passenger, was found to be carrying a straight razor in his back pocket. He was also arrested for carrying a concealed weapon.

A burglary was reported to Sheriff's Officers from the city limits of Geary on August 15 where a residence had been entered. Thieves took jewelry and cash. They also broke a lock getting into the house and destroyed a lockbox where the items were kept. The incident is still under investigation.

August 28, 2002

In Tuesday's Election for Blaine County Commissioner District 1, Louis Hood was the Republican Nominee. He will likely face Butch Brown in the November Election.

For the House of Representatives, Frank Lucas easily defeated his primary opponent with 89 per cent of the vote.

In the Governor's race it appears that Vince Orza and Brad Henry will face each other in the Democratic runoff. One the Republican side, Steve Largent got the nomination with 87% of the vote.

In the Democratic Race for Corporation Commissioner, it appears that JeffTomlin and Keith Butler will face each other in a runoff. For the Republicans, Dana Murphy and Jeff Cloud will face each other.

For the U. S. Senate, Democrats David Walters and Tom Boettcher will face each other in a runoff.

For Attorney General, Denise Bode outdistanced Tim Green on the Republican side. The runoff election is September 17.

Firefighters

Watonga Firefighters were called to Unique Car Wash on South Highway 281 Monday on an odor investigation; but nothing was found.

A smoke detector apparently overheated in the 600 block of South Prouty Tuesday. The unit was plugged into the house's electric system; but, there was no smoke. The smoke detector was disconnected at the breaker box and an electrician was called.

Watonga Police

On Tuesday Watonga Police were notified of an incident that had occurred last Thursday where a 25-year-old female victim was assaulted after refusing to purchase liquor for a group of young men. All 4 suspects attacked the woman. Two of the suspects grabbed her leg and began twisting until the bone was fractured. The other two were spraying paint on the woman at the same time. It was not known why it took 5 days to report the incident.

Police were called to Watonga Hospital Tuesday where 40-year-old Gary Robinson was being treated for a gunshot wound to the left arm. The suspect said he had been to his ex-wife's house and caught her in bed with another man. Robinson then began beating up the man. The ex-wife then began pistol-whipping Robinson with a 32-caliber automatic to make him stop when the gun discharged. The incident happened in the 500 block of North Leach.

Also Tuesday a 15-year-old girl said she was walking in the High School parking lot when a 16-year-old female swerved her pickup and struck her. No serious injuries were reported. The incident is under investigation.

Sheriff's Report

Blaine County Sheriff's Officers say vandalism at a residence in Longdale was reported at 12:30 am Monday morning. The suspect broke almost every window in a car then broke one window on the house. No one was injured. A warrant is being sought for the suspect who is also wanted on a violation of a protective order.

Later, at about 4 am Monday, the house next door was reported to be on fire. Officers say the house was fully engulfed when firemen arrived. The State Fire Marshall's Office is investigating. They say there are several indications of arson.

A violation of a protective order was called in to Sheriff's Officers Sunday from a residence in Hitchcock where a suspect was verbally harassing his estranged wife.

The T. B. Ferguson Home in Watonga will present "An Evening of Music Under the Stars" Saturday, September 14 from 6:30 til 8:30 pm. A variety of family music will be provided by local individuals. Refreshments will be served. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets. For information call 623-5069.

Emergency haying and grazing of CRP Acreage has now been extended to November 30 because weather-related conditions continue to worsen across the country. No additional payment reduction shall be charged to participants who previously hayed or grazed and incurred a 25 percent payment reduction. The previous deadline was August 31st.

Livestock or hay must be removed from the acreage by December 1. All emergency haying or grazing provisions will apply. For information contact The Farm Services Agency in Watonga.

Watonga Police

Watonga Police investigated 2 traffic accidents last week on Thursday. Vehicles driven by 17-year old Kirby Bizzell & 18-year old Christopher Bixler, both of Watonga collided in the high school parking lot. According to police, the vehicle driven by Bizzell drove through an empty parking space but failed to yield to oncoming traffic before entering the east-west travel lane and collided with Bixlers' vehicle. Bizzell's view may have been obstructed by another parked vehicle. Bixler said he hit the brakes and swerved left trying to avoid the collision. Total damage was $2100....

Police investigated another accident Wednesday when vehicles driven by 78-year old Samuel Henry Culpepper of Lockhart Texas & 35-year old Jeanette Rita Perez of Watonga collided near 10th & Weigle. There were 3 passengers.... but no one was injured. The police report indicates that Culpepper's vehicle backed out of a private drive and struck Perez's vehicle. However, both vehicles had been returned to their respective driveways before police arrived.... and the debris had been cleaned up..... so the exact point of impact could not be determined.

On Friday, Watonga Police say a gas drive-off was reported from the Midway Phillips 66 station at Highway 33 and 281. The female suspect driving a green Toyota Camry with Kansas plates got away with $14 worth of gas. Police say that conviction of stealing fuel could results in the loss of your license.

Saturday, Police discovered the front door glass at the Body Works Building on South Noble had been shattered during the night. Police believe it may have been the results of the storm Friday night since there was no evidence of vandalism.

August 27, 2002

Sheriff's Report

Blaine County Sheriff's Officers are investigating a theft of anhydrous ammonia from the Greenfield Elevator reported August 19. The suspects cut the locks off the gate and the tank valves. Missing was about 5 gallons of the chemical.

Officers say an oil field theft was reported last Wednesday form southeast of Watonga. Officials at Enogex said 6 and 8 inch pipe materials were missing. Each section weighs about 40 pounds. Total loss was $1,000.

A dog bite was reported to Sheriff's Officers Sunday. The 14-year-old male victim said a dog had broken its chain and attacked him in Longdale. The dog has been quarantined for observation. The report has been turned over to the Health Department. The child was treated and released from the hospital.

A larceny of a vehicle was reported to officers Monday from southwest of Longdale. The victim reported a 1997 Oldsmobile was missing from a residence along with 2 foster children. Both the car and the children were later located and brought back to Garfield County. The car was returned to the owner. The children are now in DHS custody.

Watonga Police

Watonga Police took 2 reports in 3 days of thefts of beer from Love's Convenience Store. The first incident was reported Thursday afternoon; the other was Sunday night. Both times, the suspect was described as a young white male with a slim build and short spiked hair.

The annual statewide HIV conference will be Thursday and Friday, October 3 and 4 at the Clarion Meridian Hotel in Oklahoma City sponsored by the State Department of Health. Cost is $100 at the door. August 22, 2002

A gospel music benefit concert will be Friday August 30 at the Senior Citizens Center in Watonga from 7 til 9 pm. Donations will be appreciated. The benefit is for Mary Ann Duncan who lost her house in a fire. Matching funds will be available from the Aid Association for Lutherans. Refreshments will be served. Singers will include the Hamptons, Luther Waggoner, Cindy Nicolai, Danny Gilliland and more. For information call 623-4283.

Firefighters

On Tuesday, Watonga Firefighters were called to the scene of yet another gas leak. this time it was in the 600 block of North Forrest and once again, it appeared the gas meter had been hit by a vehicle.

This year's Cheese Festival is Friday and Saturday October 11 & 12. It will have more than 300 exhibits including Made-In-Oklahoma products, the Art Show, Cookware Demonstrations, Commercial Exhibits, attractions like the Classic Car Show, two stages of entertainment, the Quilt Show, the Medieval Fair, the Band Concert, a Street Dance, Mechanical Bull Riding, the City Slicker Roundup, a Carnival and plenty of food.

The Parade will start at 12:30 pm Saturday with the Grand Marshall, Galen Culver, of Channel 4.

Registration for the 5-K Rat Race will be at 7:30 am Saturday at the Noble House Restaurant.

Free Shuttle Buses will be available.

Admission is $3 for adults for the entire Cheese Festival.

August 21, 2002

The Watonga FFA will be selling Blue & Gold Sausage and Chicken Fritters through September 19. The funds support the FFA activities include livestock shows and participation in the National FFA Convention and State Conventions. Contact Mitch Milliron at 623-7085 to order the products.

The Health Occupations Students of America Chapter from Chishom Trail VoTech is sponsoring a benefit dinner for Cloy Choate of Okeene who is currently awaiting a lung transplant. Proceeds from the dinner will be used to purchase medications to prevent rejection. The Chicken Noodle Dinner with all the fixings will be Sunday from 11:30 until 2:30 at the Okeene School Cafeteria. Donations will be appreciated.

Geary Police Chief Robert Haley says his department has been busy serving warrants during the past week not only from Blaine County but also from Canadian, Custer, and Oklahoma County. Haley also says warrants have been requested from the District Attorney for eluding an officer. Concerning the suspects who ran from Police, Haley says eluding an Officer only adds to the charges already filed. Haley says they may get away at the time, but the Police will get you later and you'll have to answer to an additional charge.

Haley also said his Department has been given a 'red feather' by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for their help on a drug bust in June. The letter was signed by Assistant Director of the OSBI, Jerry Hire.


August 20, 2002

Watonga Police

Watonga Police investigated two traffic accidents over the weekend. The accident Saturday involved vehicles driven by 62-year-old Cleota Price and 63-year-old Shirley Wigington both of Watonga. There was one passenger but no one was injured. The Police report says the vehicles collided at 'A' & South Noble when Price's vehicle was backing from a parking space and struck Wigington's vehicle.

On Sunday, vehicles driven by 26-year-old Dallas Hicks of Watonga and 42-year-old Debra Sweeden of Edmond collided at Love's Convenience Store when the vehicle drive by Hicks was backing up after fueling his vehicle and struck Sweeden's vehicle. Sweeden told Police she tried to back up when she saw the other car moving. No one was injured.

Watonga Police took a report of theft from the Western Inn last Friday. The victim said 2 pillows and 2 pillowcases had been taken by the room's previous occupant. Charges are pending.

A vandalism was reported to Police from Unique Car Wash on South Clarence Nash. The proprietor caught a 16-year-old girl spraying water into the coin slot of the wash dispenser. The girl said that other youths had told her that longer washes could be obtained by this method. The proprietor said the only thing that that would accomplish was short circuits, rusted exterior and wet coins. The proprietor also said another vandalism of the same natured had occurred earlier but had not been reported. On August 11, Police were told of a theft from the Laundry Basket on East Main. The owner reported a coin exchanger had been taken the night before. The owner estimates $200 cash was missing but the value of the machine was not known.

Firefighters

Watonga Firefighters were called to the 700 block of East Russworm Monday where a gas meter had been hit. Also, Monday, Firemen were called to a grass fire 5 miles south of Watonga where a vehicle had driven in the tall grass and the hot muffler caused the grass to catch fire. Ironically, the same vehicle had caused a grass fire last Friday in almost exactly the same location and for the same reason. Firefighters were assisted by the Greenfield and Bureau of Indian Affairs Fire Department.

Another grass fire, apparently caused by children, was reported last Friday from 11 miles northeast of Watonga where brush piles had been burning for several days and finally caught the grass on fire. A county road grader had the fire under control by the time firemen arrived.

Sheriff's Report

Sunday, while Watonga Police were taking a report of a stolen vehicle, Deputy Keith Sattler spotted the same vehicle on Highway 8 doing about 70 miles per hour near intersection with Laing Street. Deputy Sattler gave chase and caught up with them about a quarter-mile away. At that time, the driver bailed out of the car and was not immediately located. Sattler took the 4 juvenile females into custody that were accompanying him in the car. His mother brought the driver to the Sheriff's Office later. All 5 suspects are underage. The driver will be charged with eluding, speeding, no insurance, an illegal tag, no drivers' license and failure to stop at a stop sign.

A report charging unauthorized use of a motor vehicle was turned in to Sheriff's Officers Saturday from a Longdale resident. However; officers were told that the woman's boyfriend had taken the vehicle and then later went back to the woman's house and told her where to find it. The victim recovered the vehicle in the Okeene City limits without assistance from the Sheriff's Office. No charges are likely to be filed. A burglary in Longdale was reported by a victim who claimed a suspect entered the residence then used the restroom and left. Nothing was taken. Officers say there was no sign of firced entry.


August 19, 2002

State Representative Clay Pope has been appointed as co-chairman of the task force on valuation of gas gathering systems. He joins Representative James Covey in studying the valuation methods and evaluating those methods to determine which gas gathering system assets are subject to the jurisdiction of the County Assessors. The task force will also review existing opinions of the court and determine if those opinions are relevant.

A Family Crusade will be tonight through Wednesday at the first Assembly of God Church in Okeene starting at 6 pm. There is no charge and you are invited to bring a friend. There will be prizes, stories, songs, puppets and a ventriloquist. For information call 822-3958.

The Okeene School District has called for a special election Tuesday, September 17 to consider a $750,000 Bond Issue for constructing, equipping, repairing, and remodeling school buildings, acquiring fixtures, furniture and equipment for the school and improving school site. Only voters registered in the Okeene School District will be eligible for this bond election. For questions, call 623-5518.

The All-Sports kickoff dinner will be Tuesday night at 6:30 pm at the covered pavilion at Huff Lorang Park's Softball Fields just north of the High School on Burford. Watonga Police

Watonga Police investigated a traffic accident Tuesday when a vehicle drive by 16-year-old Jamie Lee Forrest of Watonga struck a parked vehicle. Police say Forrest was turning left into the Post Office Parking lot when she struck the unoccupied vehicle. Total damage was $900. There was one passenger; but no one was injured.


Chisholm Trail Museum in Kingfisher will have a workshop on making homemade Christmas ornaments Saturday September 14 at 1 pm. Participants are asked to being 6 buttons with shanks no larger than one-half inch. plus a pair of scissors. Cost for the seminar is $35. For reservations call 375-5176.

Sheriff's Report

Blaine County Sheriff's Officers say the Greenfield Volunteer Fire Department was vandalized sometime last week. The incident was reported Wednesday. The small windows in the west door to the building had been "pushed out"; but no other damage was discovered. Apparently the same thing had happened before; but was not reported. Total damage from the two incidents was estimated at $100.

State Superintendent Sandy Garrett reminds parents, students and teachers that the Oklahoma Safe-Call System is in place. This is the phone number to call if you have information regarding school violence that may occur. Safe-Call was initiated because in almost all school shootings in past years someone spoke up after the fact and said they had information that might have prevented the tragedy. The toll-free number is 877-safe-call, extension OK1. The phones are monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
