Frances Davis Dickens

       

Frances Davis Dickens was born to Maude Albin Davis and John C. Davis on April 2, 1908 at Blairstown, Missouri and passed away, Thursday, March 28, 2007 at the age of 98.

She joined the Presbyterian Church at age 12.  She later transferred her membership to the Presbyterian Church at Watonga, Oklahoma.  Frances graduated from Blairstown High School in 1926.  She went to Missouri State Teachers College, Warrensburg, Missouri.  She taught in a rural school one year and decided she wanted to teach primary so she went back to college and in the fall of 1929 went to Greenfield, Oklahoma to teach primary.  She had 60 children in her room and a total enrollment of 80.

On March the 22nd of 1930, she married Elmer Dickens and became a farm wife and mother of three children; Donna Louise, Lyle Elmer and Nancy Sue.  Frances was active in community work and church.  She belonged to the Presbyterian Church in Greenfield and the Red Hill Extension Club.  In 1958 when all her children had graduated from High School. she went to O.S.U. with her children and finished her work for a degree in teaching. In the fall of 1969, she started teaching second and third grade at Greenfield School.  She taught there until 1972 when she retired.  In 1973 Elmer (Buck) and Frances moved to Watonga.  Frances joined the Elva Circle of the Methodist Church, later the Wesleyan and then the Ruth Circles.  She belonged to the Flower Club, the Sew Sew Club and Retired Teachers.  She did volunteer tutoring at the Watonga Grade School and was active in helping with the restoration of the Presbyterian Church to the Ferguson Chapel.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother, Elmer Lee Davis and one sister, Dorothy Ward.

She is survived by her children, Donna Louise Redington of Watonga, Oklahoma;
     Lyle Elmer Dickens of LaSalle, Colorado;
     Nancy Sue Irion of LaSalle, Colorado;
     eight grandchildren;
     one step grandchild;
     16 great grandchildren;
     and three great great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Frances Dickens will be held Monday, April 2, 2007 at 2:00 pm at the Methodist Church in Watonga with Rev. Lee Ward and Rev. Larry Masoner officiating.  Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Watonga with Wilkinson Mortuary of Watonga in charge of arrangements.
