George Benson McFarland

George Benson McFarland was born on April 25, 1926 in Dueneweg (Joplin) Missouri to George and Lennia McFarland.  He passed away due to cancer on Friday, June 5, 2009 at the age of 83.  He served in the Navy from October 1942 to April 1946 on the USS Elmore.  After returning from World War II, he attended Chicago Technology Institute for Medical Technology and Radiology.  In 1946 he took a position with Talley Walker Hospital in Marlow, Oklahoma.  It was there that he met Bobbie Lavae Hix.  They were married on August 8, 1948 in the First Baptist Church.

He was mobilized with the 45th Division in 1950 during the Korean Conflict and served as an assistant battalion surgeon with the medical company of the 2nd Battalion, 179th Infantry.  He served in the Army from September 1950 through April 1952.  In April 1953, the McFarland's moved to Watonga, OK  where he was the medical technologist and x-ray technician at the Watonga Clinic and later became the administrator of the Watonga Municipal Hospital.

In 1970 G.B. started an insurance agency, McFarland & Associates, Inc.  He retired in 1987.  Community service, economic development, medicine, politics, church, and family were important to him all his life.

G.B. was ready to be actively involved in promoting a good cause and helping anyone who was in need.  He was a member of VFW Post 125.  He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Watonga where he served on many committees and held many offices.  In the mid 70's and early 80's, he was active in the Full Gospel Businessmen's Association.  G.B. and Bobbie went as a team on many lay witness missions.  They lived in Watonga until February 2007 when due to deteriorating health they moved to Golden Oaks Retirement Village in Enid.

He was preceded in death by both parents, 5 siblings and one granddaughter.  He is survived by his spouse Bobbie.   They had 60 happy years together.  He is survived by his son Gregory B. McFarland of Watonga and by his daughter Deborah Meier and Joel of Hitchcock.  He was proud of his five grand children, Brent McFarland and his wife Katherine of Austin, Texas; Megan McFarland of Durant, Oklahoma; Nolan Meier and his wife Pamela of St. Louis, Missouri; Luke Meier and his wife Meghan of Hitchcock, Oklahoma; Nathan Meier and his wife Katya of Okeene, Oklahoma.  He has 8 great grand children; Kylie McFarland (9); Tucker McFarland (7); Braedan McFarland (5); and Skylar McFarland (1) of Austin, Texas; Jayden Davault (1) of Durant; Ray Meier (2) of St. Louis, Missouri; Max (2) and Mia Meier (1) of Okeene, Oklahoma.

He is survived by many other relatives and cherished friends.  Military burial service for George McFarland will be held at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Watonga on Monday, June 8t, 2009 at  10:00 am and will be followed by a memorial service at the First United Methodist Church in Watonga. After the service the family invites friends to have fellowship and refreshments in the fellowship hall.  Wilkinson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.  The family would like to thanks Hospice Circle of Love of Enid and Golden Oaks Nursing Center for their tender care of our father.  Memorial contributions may be made to: the Watonga Hospital Foundation, the American Cancer Society, Hospice, Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice.
