George Thomas Hughs

George Thomas Hughs was born January 19, 1924 at Hagarsville, Arkansas to John and Ida Watson Hughs and passed away Monday, May 1, 2006 at the age of 82.

He attended Canton schools until he was drafted into the military in 1943 where he served in the Marines for three years.  During his enlistment, he attended the General Aircraft School in Norman, Oklahoma and worked on the F4U fighter planes in Memphis, Tennessee and was stationed in the Philippines and China.

After his service he moved to Richmond, California and began working for Chevron.  In 1982 he was transferred to Evanston, Wyoming where he lived until his retirement in 1985, after working for Chevron for thirty years.

He was married to Mary Alice Hughs in 1954 in Richmond, California.  She preceded him in death in 199.  In 1991, George moved back to the Watonga area to care for his sisters.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Watonga.  George started the Prison Ministry Team in Watonga through the First Baptist Church.  he was a Master Woodworker and enjoyed building clocks and caring for his yard.

On September 9, 1995 he married Laquita Plaster in Watonga.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Alice Hughs and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife Laquita of the home in Watonga

Two sons, Ron Hughs of Oregon, Tom Hughs of California

One daughter, Sally Poling and husband Cal of Big Cabin, Oklahoma

Two sisters, Clora Dixon of Watonga, Edna Klopenstein and husband Ben of Midwest City, OK

Five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, three nieces as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for George Hughs will beheld Thursday, May 4, 2006 at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Watonga. Burial will follow in the Geary Cemetery in Geary with Wilkinson Mortuary of Watonga in charge of arrangements.
