Margaret D. Benway

       

Margaret D. Benway was born in Broken Bow, Oklahoma on December 23, 1924 to John Monroe and Mittie Carl Compton and passed away Friday, November 21, 2008 in Enid, Oklahoma at the age of 83.

The family moved from Broken Bow to Watonga by covered wagon when Margaret was an infant.  They settled on a farm south of town close to the Canadian River.  Growing up, she and her many siblings spent many hours playing on the river.

She graduated from Watonga High School in 1942, she attended college at the University of Oklahoma where she and her twin sister, Marie were feature twirlers for the Pride of Oklahoma marching band.  She married C.J. Benway March 31, 1946 at Waldron, Kansas.  She worked for Ted Fisher for a few years before being employed by Watonga State Bank as secretary for Mr. L.J. Barrett.  She was employed for over 20 years and retired as Vice-President.  Margaret was best known to her grandchildren, Jay, Todd, Clint, Mkka, Koby and Kevin as BomBom.  She loved fixing them all their favorite meals whenever they dropped by her house, as well as feeding their many friends that tagged along with them.  Margaret was her grandkids biggest supporter in all of their activities.  She loved cooking, sewing, gardening, golfing and fishing.  She is preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, four sisters and one daughter, Kathy Scoville.  She is survived by:

     her husband, C.J. Benway of the home in Watonga
     one son, Mike Benway and wife Teresa of Enid
     one son-in-law, Terry Scoville of Watonga
     twin sister, Marie Dickson of Watonga
     two sisters, Thelma Gungoll of Enid, Sherrill Smith of El Reno
     brother, Bryan Compton of Watonga
     grandchildren, Jay Benway and wife Jennifer of Altus, Todd Benway and Heidi of Derby, Kansas, Clint Benway of Seagoville, Texas, Mika and Brian Stansberry of Midlothian, Texas, Koby and Mendy Scoville of Edmond, and Kevin and Natalie Scoville of Edmond.
     six great granddaughters and five great grandsons as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins

Funeral services for Margaret Benway will be held at 10:00 am at the First Christian Church in Watonga with Rev. David Johnson officiating.  Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Watonga.  Arrangements by Wilkinson Mortuary of Watonga.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Watonga Hospital Foundation.
