Pioneer Days

 May 23rd, 2009

A good crowd was on hand down town on Pioneer Day to witness one of the best Pioneer Day Parades we have had to date. Competition was keen in the best decorated bed category. All of the entries which included the Chamber of Commerce, Lynn Wright Insurance, decorated by Logos Salon, Watonga Lions Club, (The Kiwanis club was obvious by its’ absence THIS YEAR), Opportunities Inc., and the Watonga Christian Church Youth Department did an excellent job in decorating their beds.

The bed races were very competitive as well, there was very little difference in the timed events according to Farrol Boyd ,our timer and judge. but once again the Lions excelled and won a very close race.
The judges said it was almost too close to call between the Watonga Lions and Opportunities inc. but felt like Opportunities had a very slight edge.

We appreciate Dr. Tim Nelson in helping to round up
runners for the bed races, seems like this gets a little
tougher each year.

The cow chip throwing was a lot of fun as always, and
I am sure everyone enjoyed the music by John Diamond
and the Hampton brothers along with the performance
by the HOHO Clowns from Clown Ally.

And what an honor it was for us to have Charlie and
Donna White as our parade Marshals.

All in all the whole day was a lot of fun and we appreciate everyone’s participation, including all of the folks who
came down and helped make the day a tremendous
success by participating in the parade.

Of course no event can take place or be successful,
without a lot work going on behind the scenes, in
preparation for the big event.

There were seven teams entered in the horse shoe
pitching contests, two of which took home the top money.
Winners were, First place , Kevin and Chad Biggs, second
place Donnie Dunn and Curt Gurney , third place went to
Greg McMorris and Kyle Couffer .

We appreciate Larry Roman Nose furnishing the Color
Guard for the parade and also bringing us the Cheyenne
Arapaho Indian Dancers and Drummers.

All of us who are involved in the Main Street Program
were proud to have these good folks as our Pioneer
Honorees.

We appreciate you so much. We also appreciate
Damon Jones making the signs for the parade participants.

This year the entire Main Street board, plus many volunteers
were involved in making the event work. Rex Kraft, Mary Lee
Jones and Rhonda Olsen spent a lot of time putting the parade
together and what a magnificent job they did. Alvin Woodruff,
Dr. Lucas, Lewis and Mina Green, Donnie Dunn, Gerald Daugherty
and Mike Russell operated the concession stand along with
Mary Lee Jones and Rex Kraft.  Tony Kohl announced the parade
and helped Mike Russell with the cow chip throwing contests, while Gerald Daugherty filmed the parade for posterity. Donnie Dunn
was in Charge of the horse shoe pitching and also won the cow chip throwing again this year.
