Business of the Month for October The Watonga Republican
The Watonga Republican is Blaine County’s
oldest business, having been established on Oct.
12, 1892, by T.B. and Elva Ferguson.
The Curtin family has been involved with the
newspaper since Jan. 1, 1941, when Gerald
“Cowboy” Curtin purchased one-fourth interest
from Les Chambers and then on Jan. 1, 1945, he
bought full ownership.
After his
death in 1965, his widow, Dr. Virginia Curtin,
and children continued publishing it. After her
death in 1977, Tim Curtin has been publisher.
The Republican tries to conduct itself professionally
in keeping with its seniority, but it also tries
to avoid becoming too tame, as any conscientious
newspaper should. That’s also in keeping with
the feisty spirit of its pioneering founders.
The newspaper covers the Blaine County area as well as
Watonga and also has become a main source of
news and communication for the Cheyenne &
Arapaho Tribes. It seeks to provide the news
informed citizens need.
News papering requires a myriad of details to be
accomplished prior to “deadline.” This includes
photography, news gathering and writing, sale of
advertising and composition of the finished
advertisements, gathering of garage sale
notices, etc., compiling legal notices and
typeset, proofreading of all content, to name
just some of them.
Locally the staff also publishes the Hinton Record and
must do all the above for that paper also. This
makes 104 deadlines a year, and in 44 years that
is what makes editors go gray.
